Hopefully, this is something you’ve thought of before. “What is the best beard style for me?” No? Well, maybe you will consider changing your beard game after this article, I hope to inspire you to choose the best beard style for your face!
Beards are more or less here to stay. And even to this day I have people saying they’ve been inspired and started growing out a beard. And the funny thing is, they are both young and old! As long as they have some kind of beard growth that is. It’s always a pleasure to help guys out that are just in the early stages of their beards.
From a very young age, we go to a hairdresser (which is old guys language for barbers that accepts both men and women) and having a different haircut every other time is more or less standard procedure.
This raises a question. Why isn’t this the same with beards?
In this article we will cover these following facial shapes:
- Oval
- Rectangular
- Round
- Square
- Diamond
- Triangle

Face shape
First off, we need to discuss the topic of face shapes. It’s very important to know what kind of face shape you have to determine the optimal shave for your face shape.
There are plenty of guides for measuring your face, however I believe that its more than enough to simply look in the mirror, and look at which corresponding picture you look the most alike. Se below picture for examples:
Oval face
Congratulations. You have the face of a guy that can pull pretty much every beard off. This is by far the most symmetrically pleasing regarding beards. You can pull off bushy sides, short on the bottom. Or even short on the sides and longer on the bottom. Both will look awesome! However, the one thing to keep in mind that sharp angles and cuts, might not be the best fit for this type of face. Since the rounded face will not go as symmetrical with sharp edges.
Rectangular face
Since this type of face is more a rectangular shape, you’ll benefit a lot from adding a bit of shape to your sides. Build the sides up with a bushy beard and keeping the bottom relatively short. This will add to your existing facial shape. Avoid growing a long and narrow beard. If you want to go for a longer beard, try to make it fairly wide.
Round face
I think I qualify into this category. As I’ve found it, round faces benefit from a longer beard to make the illusion of a longer face. Also, try to keep the sides fairly short as well.
As my face is pretty round, it makes a really difference on how my face is perceived. I try to keep the edges pretty sharp as well.
Square face
There are a lot of similarities with the round shape on this one. Here you want to create the illusion of having a more angular face but following the natural lines of your already squared face. So narrow on the sides, and longer and angular on the bottom.
Diamond face
If you look at the picture of the diamond shape, you have wide cheeks and also a narrow forehead and jaw. Meaning keep the sides short, and grow the bottom of your beard. One thing to think about is that keep the pointy chin fairly short, and the sides longer and try to sculpt your beard into a more rounded shape.
Triangle face
Having this shape means you have a wider jaw and a narrower forehead. This isn’t the easiest of beards to master. You can either have a pretty decent stubble with this shape, or you can do what I would suggest and try to save it out a bit, and keep it very short on the sides and try to save as much out on the bottom so you have the ability to sculpt it to a more angular shape. However, this requires some length to the beard.
Conclusion
So, there you have it. These are pretty generic and not taking anything else into consideration beside that you actually have a beard. But as I see it, this is how you get the best beard style for your face.
I’ve read a fair number of guides, articles, physical magazines addressing this topic. And they all seem to come to different conclusions.
I would recommend you, to first of go with your gut. This is your beard, not anyone else’s.
Since all men have different thicknesses to your beards and not all have the luxury to just rely on facial shapes but have to take other things into considerations as well. This is why you need to do errors; you need to find out what you think matches your personality and the look you’re going for. You can also experiment with both oils and beard vax to get a specific look that you’re after.
I would argue that this isn’t an exact science. We’ve talked about a few different scenarios now, and what I consider to the best beard for your face shape. But as I did mention both thickness in beard, and other overall attributes could make other beards stand out even more.
